- Baking soda
- Vinegar
- Food coloring
- Heart ice cube tray (or candy mold)
- Eyedroppers
- Storage container
- Water
- Bowl
Instructions:
It’s best to prepare this activity the night before.
- Start by mixing baking soda and water. I eye-balled everything, but it should be almost like a paste. Droopy paste sounds like a good description! Add food coloring (use a ton of red) and mix.
- Fill the heart mold and freeze.
- Next, place the frozen hearts into a storage container. Add vinegar into a small bowl, prepare the eyedroppers and set close by.
What is my child learning and improving?
- Sensories (kids are exploring smells, hearing and seeing the hearts fizz)
I like how this article describes sensory play. “Sensory activities facilitate exploration and naturally encourage children to use scientific processes while they play, create, investigate and explore. ”
- Experiment (how does baking soda and vinegar react when mixed together)
- Fine motor skills (filling and pressing the eyedropper strengthens the fingers)
- Independence (this activity is awesome at entertaining kids, so they stay busy and occupied!)
