Learning colors can be fun with this Apple Tree Button Color Sort which is a amazingly fun fine motor activity!
It’s super quick to set up, in fact I “constructed” the apple trees in the kitchen while my son sat and played a little bit in his room. I caught that moment he was busy, prepped this activity and it wasn’t very long, trust me! Also, I had all of the materials at home, one being a recycled material, the paper rolls! I always save those for future crafts 🙂
My kids love to sort. Either by color, size, items, you name it. It’s fun for them and I love it. I love that they’re busy, learning and developing new skills and most importantly enjoying the activity.
This Apple Tree Button Color Sort is great for many areas of child’s’ development. To name a few; fine motor, hand-eye coordination and cognitive skills. Keep reading to see exactly what and how kids are developing and strengthening specific areas.

Materials For Apple Tree Button Color Sort:
- Paper rolls (2)
- Hot glue gun + glue sticks
- Green cardstock
- Buttons (red, green)
- Popsicle sticks (2)
- Craft scissors
- Scotch tape
- Bin
- Kids tweezers
Instructions:
- Using the scissors cut two large trees out of the green cardstock (without the trunks).
- Glue one tree to the back of one paper roll and the second to the other paper roll. I used a popsicle stick as support and glued each one to the backs of the trees and trunks.
- Glue 3-5 buttons onto the tree. One with only red, other with only green.
- Now secure your trees inside a bin using scotch tape. YOU CAN USE A SHOE BOX AND USE HOT GLUE TO GLUE TO TREES TO THE INSIDE OF THE SHOE BOX.
- Now add the rest of the buttons to the bin and add tweezers.
What is my child learning and improving?
- Fine motor skills (squeezing the tweezers together to grasp a small button, exercising finger and hand strength)
- Hand-eye coordination (carefully bringing up the tweezers with the button to the right tree trunk)
- Cognitive skills (analyzing the buttons, shapes, colors, color hues, comparing, thinking, matching)
- Colors (simple, two-color sorting activity like this helps toddlers learn and master distinguishing the colors)
TIP- wouldn’t it be even more fun if you made 3 or 4 or 5 or even 8 trees with all sorts of colors?! 🙂
