Floral Play-dough Medallions

These Floral Play-dough Medallions are a creative way to use play-dough (even old scraps of it) and withered florals and create something beautiful and unique!

All you need is play-dough, flowers and a tray (yep, that’s just 3 materials!) and you’ve got an exciting, creativity building activity for toddlers and preschoolers. It’s sure going to keep the little ones busy, because which kids doesn’t love play-dough?

My son (3) loves to mix in stuff into play-dough creating something, well um…creative if you ask him. So whenever I have something that I’m about to toss (sequins, leftover glitter, notions, even unused small stickers) I’ll give them it and my kids will go to town. This time I had a flower bouquet that started to wither. I took apart the flowers and leaves, laid them out on a tray (for a visual) and they loved it. We each made these Floral Play-dough Medallions and then shared our creations with each other!

MATERIALS for floral play-dough medallions:

Instructions:

Super simple to set up. Place flower petals, leaves, cut-up stems into each section of a separated tray. Also add the play-dough.

Tip #1- Setting up the petals, leaves, stems and play-dough out on a separated tray gives the kids a visual of all the materials they’re able to use! Super helpful with toddlers as they get to see all the things they’re able to use.

Tip #2- Using a play-dough rolling pin makes it easier to create the medallions perfectly round, but I prefer the kids (especially the younger ones) to use their fingers to spread out the play-dough (fine/small motor skills).

What is my child learning and improving?

  • Creativity: This activity is amazing at sparking and improving that little noggins’ creativity. What color petals, leaves to choose. What design/pattern to come up with. There’s endless possibilities for creativity!
  • Fine motor skills: Using fingers to spread out the play-dough, picking up the petals, leaves and stems and plucking them into the medallions.
  • Independence: This activity is pretty awesome at keeping the kids happy and content, so expect them to stay busy and independent for a nice chunk of time 🙂
