Crushed Chalk Art

crushed chalk art- toddler at play (1)

Create beautiful art with this Crushed Chalk Art craft!

Do you have leftover, odd-to-hold, broken pieces of sidewalk chalk? Don’t get rid of them yet! I have a quick and easy idea to put those last bits of chalk to good use. Crush them and make colorful, 3D art prints!

We did this craft with the kiddos the other day and they loved the easy steps (even my 2 year old could follow along with out a problem!). Using the liquid glue to paint a picture is the best part of course. I don’t know what it is about liquid glue but my little one loves to squeeze it and make a huge mountain of glue. So this craft was right up his alley!

Keep reading to see what areas of childs’ development are being exercised and improved with this craft!

MATERIALS for crushed chalk art:

  • Sidewalk chalk
  • White cardstock
  • Liquid glue
  • Large plate or tray
  • Sandwich bags
  • Rolling pin
  • Craft scissors

Instructions:

  • Begin by crushing the chalk. An easy way to do that is to place a piece of chalk into a sandwich bag and crush it with a rolling pin, then dump on the plate and repeat with the rest of the chalk pieces (you can use the same sandwich bag).
  • After you’ve crushed all of the chalk pieces, prepare the cards by cutting an index card sized pieces of paper using the white cardstock.
  • To make the chalk art, use the liquid glue to paint a picture, design or pattern on the white cardstock paper and then carefully stamp into the crushed chalk. Make sure every corner of the cardstock gets pressed into the chalk for a few seconds, then release and shake of the excess chalk. Let dry.

What is my child learning and improving?

  • Fine motor skills (pressing the glue to paint a picture, being careful with the cardstock paper and chalk, lifting by the edges)
  • Creativity (children are coming up with their own designs/pictures on the cardstock and choosing what colors of chalk to use)
  • Steps (this is a great activity for kids to grasp and learn to follow steps and directions)

TIP- You can talk to your kids about each picture they drew, what colors are they using, etc.

Simple sensory play idea for today using beet-dyed Simple sensory play idea for today using beet-dyed rice and a few fun sensory tools 💗 Now, yes, you’ve read that right. I dyed this rice using a little bit of beet water (from boiling beets) and about a tablespoon of distilled white vinegar. Add all into a big ziploc bag, shake and spread out on a sheet pan to dry completely, I like to do this overnight. This recipe is without any dyes, which I try to avoid. Even food dyes contain “lakes” and toxic stuff. The beet water made a lovely deep pink color, perfect for Valentine’s Day! If you try this recipe out, let me know in the comments if you enjoyed it AND TAG me so I can take a peak! SAVE for later and TAG your friends below to share!
