This Name Word Search activity is a breeze to set up and kids will absolutely love it!
I couldn’t wait to share this activity with you all! I love simple and easy activities that will keep little ones busy and learning all at the same time and I know you will too! This activity requires simple materials you probably have at home already and it takes very little effort.
Word searches are fun, I still love them myself. And my almost 5 year old really enjoys them too. BUT since English is her second language (and considering all of the word searches I can find are English), she struggles to read and find the words, thus it’s no fun. At least for now as we are learning Enlish and its alphabet. So I wanted to create a word search that’s simple, improves cognitive skills, reading skills and familiarizes with the alphabet (and is English for that matter). And this Name Word Search is it! The child is searching for one word, their name! Of course you can make is a level higher and include mom’s, dad’s, pets name, whatever you want but I kept it simple this time.

Tape a large sheet of easel paper to the wall. Next using the permanent markers (any color) draw a large square. Above the square write the childs’ name. Now starting at the top fill it with random letters across. Do the same to one column down. Fill the whole square with letters along with the childs’ name in different places. It can be vertical, horizontal, or diagonal for older children. It doesn’t have to be perfect but try to go in row and column at a time, this helps to keep it neat!
What is my child learning and improving?
- Cognitive skills (kids are THINKING! They’re looking at all the letters, comparing, matching, analyzing and predicting)
- Fine motor skills (holding the marker/crayon with thumb and pointer finger and using the wrist to circle the names)
- Gross motor skills (this vertical activity allows the kids to stand and walk, exercising the lower part of their bodies’)
- Name and letters (kids are looking at the letters, naming them and reading)
- Concentration
- Independency
